The Gurtersluin Matchmaker

In the early 1900’s in the townland of Gurtersluin there was a Matchmaker by the name of James Murray, James was my Grandfather and he wasn’t always a matchmaker, he was born in November 1868 and as a young man he went to Yorkshire where he worked as a Stonemason. It was while he was in Yorkshire that he met and married my Grandmother, Henrietta Hooper and returned to Gurtersluin.

Over the years I have heard many stories of his ‘Matchmaking’ experiences, but for now I will share one of them with you.
